Day trip to Wharram Percy
30 April at 7:00 am to 9:00 pm£15
Join us, and expert speaker Stuart Wrathmell, on this Layers of History coach trip to Wharram Percy, the famous deserted medieval village in North Yorkshire, on Tuesday 30th April.
Wharram Percy is one of the largest and best preserved of Britain's 3,000 or so known deserted medieval villages. It is also undoubtedly the most famous. For over 60 years, archaeologists have pioneered new techniques here to understand what life was like in the village and why it was eventually deserted.
Stopping en route at Thixendale village hall, Stuart will give a talk about the exploration of the Wharram site from 1950 till 1990, and what he thinks we know about its development on the basis of the excavations and associated research. The village hall and the coach both have toilets. Following that, we will drive the short distance to Wharram Percy where Stuart will guide us around the site.
You will need to bring lunch and please dress appropriately for the weather.
Access: It is a long walk (about ¾ mile) from the car park to the site, parts of which are steep and muddy. The site contains rugged terrain which can be challenging, and it is not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. Please be aware: Farm livestock is likely to be present on the path. It promises to be a fascinating trip!
You can join the executive coach at Boston (7.30am), Heckington or Lincoln (8.40am).
