Online Event – Exploring Grantham’s Hidden Graveyard
September 11 @ 10:00 am - September 20 @ 5:00 pm
Don’t miss this opportunity to digitally explore the history of Grantham’s former graveyard, in use from 1812-57, and set in a wildlife haven blooming with cyclamen flowers and containing the fascinating headstones and grave slabs of about 120 people
The now disused graveyard in Manthorpe Road, Grantham, was opened in 1812 as the town’s churchyard at St Wulfram’s was full. It was the principal burial ground in the town until 1857 when the Harrowby Road cemetery was opened. Today it is a haven for wildlife with a range of trees planted in the late 1960s and cyclamen flowers carpeting part of the graveyard.
A digital exhibition highlighting interesting spots within the graveyard, as well as the history of the site from its conception to its eventual closure, giving an insight into the social history of Grantham in the first half of the 19th century. It will also focus on local stories and family history connected to the burials.
