Description

The historic county of Lincolnshire is large; about 75 miles north to south and 45 miles east to west with a coastal boundary over 100 miles long. By virtue of these factors it has always played an important role in Britain’s transport infrastructure from the development of prehistoric tracks and continuing with routes such as Roman Ermine Street, the Georgian Great North Road and the Victorian East Coast Main Line, the nation’s premier railway route. Similarly it has always featured an extensive internal communications network for travellers and traders moving about the county alike.

This book deals with the principle means of transport, that is to say, roads, waterways and railways. It also describes the ports and harbours on the coast and tidal waterways while a chapter on bridges addresses the important matter of what happens when roads, rails and water meet.
