The Tudor Dynasty: Highs, Lows, and Legacies – Talk 5

Join us, online with Carol Ann Lloyd as we learn about the Tudors.

The Tudor Dynasty was by no means the longest in English or British history, lasting a comparatively short 118 years (1485-1603). But it is the most studied, talked about, famous, infamous, and notorious dynasty in history. Why do the Tudors have such a strong hold on our imaginations? Part is the actual history: the emergence of a settled monarchy after the years of chaos in the 15th century. Part is the horror of favorite pastimes such as bear baiting and hangings and beheadings. The Tudors were a bloody monarchy, with Henry VIII executing for personal, political, and religious reasons. There were also moments of glory, a new focus on royal magnificence, palace building, clothing, and jewelry. The Tudor dynasty saw the emergence of royal and individual portraiture, and as a result we have numerous ways of “seeing” the royals and their court. The emergence of the Royal Navy and its success against the Spanish Armada, and the emergence of London as a pivotal player in international trade put England squarely in Europe’s political and financial center. Playwrights like William Shakespeare also put England in the spotlight. The Tudor dynasty, with some of the most famous monarchs in history, changed England, Europe, and the world.
