The Wars of the Roses and Emergence of the Tudors – Talk 1

Join us, online with Carol Ann Lloyd as we learn about the Tudors.

The series of battles later named “The Wars of the Roses” rocked England through the second half of the 15th century. Questions over the rightful succession to the throne, which began with Henry Bolingbroke claiming Richard II’s throne and beginning the Lancaster dynasty, took hold as Richard Duke of York claiming Henry VI’s throne. The throne changed hands repeatedly, with Henry VI and Edward IV taking turns, then Richard III taking the throne instead of his nephew Edward V. Henry Tudor came out of nowhere (actually 14 years exile in France and Brittany) to make his own claim, based on his mother’s descent from Edward III. Henry positioned himself as the Lancastrian heir and married Elizabeth of York. His story, embodied in the Tudor rose, was that their union ended the years of battles and represented a new and lasting peace. But would it be enough to quiet alternative claims to the throne? Did the Tudors have what it took to not only win but hold power?
