The Mongol invasion of the Near East - non-member ticket

Don’t miss this opportunity to discover the mysterious and enigmatic history of the Knights Templar with Dr Nicholas Morton. This is the third of four online, monthly, talks.

Date & Time: Thursday 15th April 2021 at 7pm

During the course of the Thirteenth Century the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan expanded to encompass a substantial proportion of Eurasia. Its vast territories spanned from Vietnam to the Polish border while fear of its powerful armies spread even further afield. The Mongols’ interventions in the Near East are less well known and yet their actions were to have a profound effect on the region’s geopolitics, causing some empires to fall and others to rise. This lecture will explore the Near East at the time of the Mongol invasions, showing how their assaults helped to bring about the final collapse of the Crusader States whilst also enabling the rise of both the Mamluk and Ottoman Empires; powers that would control much of the area for many centuries to come.
