The Clue

Before the fire station was built, the site used to be a water mill. The Victorians chose this site because there was easy access to river water for the fire engines to use. Look around the building.

The Question

Can you find the original date the station was built?

Hint

The Fire Station can be found on Watergate. The street has several shops and businesses, including Interflora, the Legionaires Club and Watergate Yard.

 

Have a look all the way round the building, as the plaque with the date is not on the front of the Fire Station.

The Answer

The Fire Station was originally built in 1829 and was in use until the mid 20th Century. Having a local fire brigade was often seen as a mark of wealth and pride for a town. Towns often held celebrations when they bought a new fire engine. They would even have a christening ceremony for it!
