A Trainee’s Farewell

This piece was written by Laabiyah Iqbal, Building Preservation Trust Management Trainee at Heritage Lincolnshire from September 2018 – 2019

Laabiyah has been with us on an 18-month placement as a Building Preservation Trust Management Trainee at Heritage Lincolnshire. She has been one of three trainees to date based there; and started alongside our Archaeology Trainees Asa and Maeya. She shared what a week in the life of her traineeship looked like with us, and since then no two days have continued to be the same. On Tuesday 24th March 2020, Laabiyah officially finished her traineeship and became a fully-fledged employee at Heritage Lincolnshire who have appointed her to the role of Conservation Project coordinator.

Looking back on her time with the project Laabiyah has the following to say:

“The Historic Environment Skills Traineeship has been an amazing opportunity that has allowed me to develop my skills and gain more confidence. I have especially enjoyed the training opportunities provided and my favourites were woodcarvings and a course called ‘Making Heritage Your Business’.

I have also had the opportunity to apply for Associate IHBC membership, which I am still awaiting the decision.  Last summer I attended the IHBC Annual School which was great fun, and it was great to network with people within the same field.

For me this traineeship was the best way to enter the sector and I would highly recommend it to those who want to enter a career in Heritage. I am excited for my new role at Heritage Lincolnshire and will be working on some amazing projects.”

Heritage Lincolnshire’s Conservation Manager, Matt Bentley has overseen part of Laabiyah’s traineeship and speaks warmly of how she has developed in that time.

“Laabiyah has exceeded all our expectations and has developed far beyond her Trainee role into an integral part of the Heritage Lincolnshire team, providing valuable support and development to a number of our projects.”

Congratulations Laabiyah on all you have achieved over the last 18 months and our very best wishes for the rest of your career.
