Heritage Lincolnshire is granted Young Archaeologists Club Status!

The Community Heritage Team at Heritage Lincolnshire are excited to announce that they have restarted Lincolnshire’s only Young Archaeologists Club (YAC) group and will be running it for the benefit of our young archaeologists of the county!  The Lincoln YAC group is an affiliate group of the wider Young Archaeologist Club network.

We will be doing  a wide range of activities exploring how archaeology can help us learn about our ancestors.  We will be working with current archaeological and historic projects in the county, visiting local historic sites and buildings, examining real artefacts, learning how to research and investigate archaeology with experts, discovering how things were made through craft activities and using modern technology to recreate the past and much more.

The Branch Leader is own our Community Archaeologist, Lydia Hendry, supported by two of our enthusiastic Heritage Lincolnshire volunteers.  Lydia has a particular passion for education through hands on learning and setting up a YAC group has been a personal and professional goal for her in the last couple of years.  She has been running a monthly archaeology club since January and is excited that we are now linked to YAC, to give our young members even more opportunities!  So far we have explored the hidden histories of overlooked communities in the Roman, Saxon and Medieval period with the Reimagining Lincoln project (University of Lincoln), and practiced pottery reconstruction with the Lincoln Archaeology Group.  We have even solved a Roman murder with our Lincoln Roman Remains Challenge… and this is just the beginning!

Here at Heritage Lincolnshire, we know how important it is to help people feel connected to their history – it is a huge part of the Trust’s charitable aims to deliver lifelong education, building conservation and archaeological fieldwork and research. As specialists in Heritage, the county of Lincolnshire and having key links with projects that are happening across the region, we feel we are the right people to develop the club.

The Lincoln YAC group is based at St Peter-at-Gowts Church Hall, Lincoln and meets once a month, usually on the first Saturday 10-12, for 8-16 year olds.  Sessions have a small charge, and booking is essential.  Click here to find out more, or email learning@heritagelincolnshire.org

The Lincoln YAC group is only one of the many projects our Community Heritage Team is running – in addition to events, community excavations and workshops, we also have an extensive education program, click here to find out more!
