Christmas Customs

15 December 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us for an interactive talk with music as we celebrate our Lincolnshire customs and traditions in a fun way!

Christmas Customs – All families and nations have their Christmas traditions. Many winter festivities originated centuries ago and have continued unquestioned, their origins unclear.

This presentation examines the beginnings of some of these unusual events – the role of mistletoe, yule logs, flying reindeer pulling a sleigh, mince pies, Boxing Day, killing a wren etc. Starting in the build-up to the festive period, this presentation takes us through the bleak midwinter and ends, as Christmas used to do, at Candlemas Day (February 2nd).

It includes New Year’s Day, when “Fidlers and others acted lascivious and effeminate parts” and the various seasonal traditions of drama and dancing.

There are three talks in this Lincolnshire Customs and Traditions series. Seeking to be lively but respectful, informative but entertaining, Lincolnshire Archaeologist and Folk Musician Tom Lane does the presenting with acclaimed local musicians Nigel Creasey and Teri Clarke giving an authentic local voice to the songs.
