Lincolnshire Crimes and Criminals

17 June 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for an interactive talk with music as we celebrate our Lincolnshire customs and traditions in a fun way!

Lincolnshire Crimes and Criminals – While the rich could get away with murder – literally – the poor could find themselves tortured, transported to the other side of the world, or more likely hanged, for the most trivial offences.

This presentation starts with some Lincolnshire ‘Cold Cases’, prehistoric and Roman murders, before examining some notorious criminals from the 17th to 19th centuries. Attitudes to crime and punishment are to the fore and we will meet Lincolnshire’s most amiable highwayman, its most caring hangman, its most misogynistic judge and its most backward-looking MP. Oh, and Lincolnshire Poachers get a mention too! Relevant folk songs played live are all part of the package.

There are three talks in this Lincolnshire Customs and Traditions series. Seeking to be lively but respectful, informative but entertaining, Lincolnshire Archaeologist and Folk Musician Tom Lane does the presenting with acclaimed local musicians Nigel Creasey and Teri Clarke giving an authentic local voice to the songs.
